Sustainability

At Rachel Nasvik we can appreciate the search for something special and the need for it to last. Since 2003 we have understood the importance of slow fashion, manufacturing locally, and using quality materials that will stand the test of time. Please join us on our journey going forward as we continue to work towards increasing our sustainability, and lessen our impact on the world.

MINIMAL WASTE: As a company that works with leather, it is incredibly important to us that we don’t waste any part of the skins. We make SLG’s from larger bag scraps, and utilize patchwork designs for smaller pieces. This ensures that every inch of usable leather goes into a bag instead of the garbage.

MADE LOCAL: All bags are produced in the NYC area. Keeping production local creates jobs in our community and helps our economy grow. It also allows us to have greater control over production and make smaller quantities. This in turn creates less waste, uses less energy, cuts down on transportation cost and reduces harmful emissions.

MADE ETHICALLY: Having a close relationship with our manufacturer allows us to verify that all of our workers are paid fairly, and work in proper conditions.

MADE TO LAST: Rachel Nasvik bags are handcrafted using quality materials. This ensures that your bag will last for years to come, and will balance out the price by amount of times you are able to wear it. We choose to work with leather because it’s an incredibly durable material, and stands up to the test of time.

SEASONLESS: We make classic bags that can be worn in any season. By focusing on everyday lives instead of seasonal trends, we can reduce a lot of unnecessary waste that comes from excessive product development. We thoughtfully update our inventory/ assortment as needed, rather than following the fashion calendar.

LEATHER: We source our handbag leather from Italian tanneries that have been certified and rated by the Leather Working Group. Our SLG’s utilize leather that is sourced from deadstock, past seasons, and scraps off the cutting room floor. By using these materials in our handbags, we are not only helping to reduce waste from the fashion industry, but aiming to give purpose to something that would otherwise be thrown in the garbage.

HARDWARE: We use solid brass hardware on all handbags, which adds to the overall durability of our bags. As the natural patina comes out over time, a natural polishing agent may be used to restore it to its original color and shine.

CARE OF/ CLEANING: We recommend using a clean towel with water and/ or a mild soap to remove any marks. The leather has natural oils and will wear in nicely over time, but a leather lotion may be used if desired. Make sure to test on an inconspicuous area FIRST to avoid stains and permanent discoloration.
